Learning to Work With Light
The Brief
This project was an exploration of how light can shape emotion, atmosphere, and presence within an image. Working between the black and white studios, I approached each photograph as a small visual story, guided by instinct, research, and the challenge of learning to control studio equipment such as soft boxes, beauty dishes, strobes, reflectors, and long exposure setups.
Portraiture
For my first image, I was drawn to the quiet drama of black and white portraiture. I used a beauty dish in the black studio to sculpt light around my model, aiming for a mood that felt intimate yet striking. Finding the right balance of focus, shadow, and intensity became part of the discovery.
Product Photography
My product photograph centred on a Givenchy perfume bottle. I studied luxury imagery and refined product lighting to understand how brands communicate elegance through simplicity. After experimenting with water as a concept, I shifted direction and instead used soft lighting, fabric, and reflective surfaces to create a sense of quiet sophistication.
Light Painting & Still Life
For my light painting image, I wanted to capture movement around stillness. Using long exposure in the black studio, I drew light around the object, inspired by minimal references that celebrated simplicity. Finally, in the white studio, I chose to photograph a rose as a symbol of softness and intention, adjusting the white balance to create a gentle, contemplative mood.
